Obs. [Origin obscure. There was no vb. agaze (agǽstan taking the place of *agǽsan in OE. = Goth. usgaisjan), and the sense is against its being pa. pple. of simple GAZE, with A- for ȝe-. Prob. a variant of agast (AGHAST), preserving long quantity of OE. gǽstan (with agast, agās’d, agāsed; cf. lit, līghted; dreamt, drēamed; past, passed, pāced), and influenced in use by to gaze, stand at gaze.] Affrighted, astounded, amazed.
