The words with this ending which are designations of persons (in most instances repr. actual or assumed Gr. compounds of -λόγος ‘speaker, discourser,’ and related to parallel formations in -logy) are now little used, derivatives in -loger, -logist, or -logian being commonly preferred. Examples are Assyriologue, † astrologue, ideologue, philologue, Sinologue, † theologue.
