Tempest-tossed, -tost a. Tossed by or as by a tempest. Hence Tempest-toss v. trans. and intr., to toss or pitch about as a tempest or a tempestuous sea; to agitate or be agitated violently; Tempest-tossing, violent agitation by or as by a tempest, etc.

1 1592.  Shaks., Rom. & Jul., III. v. 138. The windes thy sighes … will ouer set Thy tempest tossed body. Ibid. (1605), Macb., I. iii. 25. Though his Barke cannot be lost, Yet it shall be Tempest-tost.
