17,000 Articles from the Encyclopædia Britannica, 11th & 12th eds. Christopher Tye (1497?–1572) English musician, born at Westminster. Graduated B.Mus. from Cambridge (1536); he held the office of musical instructor to Edward VI. when Prince of Wales, received holy orders and was granted the degree of doctor of music from Cambridge in 1545, and from Oxford in 1548. Under Elizabeth, he was organist to the Chapel Royal, and produced various services and anthems, some of which are yet in repute among musicians. Dr. Tye’s general scholarship was considerable. One of his most curious works is a metrical translation of the Actes of the Apostles, set to music. © 2022 WEHD.com
