James Orton (1830–1877) American naturalist; born in Seneca Falls, NY, on the 21st of April 1830; graduated at Williams College in 1855, and at Andover Theological Seminary in 1858; spent some time in travel in Europe and the East; became a Congregational minister in 1860; was appointed instructor in natural science in the University of Rochester in 1866, and in 1869 was called to the chair of natural history at Vassar College, which he held until his death. He was at the head of the expedition (1867–68) under the auspices of Williams College which crossed the Andes of Ecuador, descending the Napo and the Amazon, collecting the first fossils discovered in that region; and made another visit in 1873, ascending the Amazon, and died during the passage of Lake Titicaca, Peru, on the 25th of September 1877. He published Miners’ Guide and Metallurgists’ Directory (1849); The Proverbialist and the Poet (1852); The Andes and the Amazon (1870); Underground Treasures: How and Where to Find Them (1872); Liberal Education of Women (1873); and Comparative Zoology, Structural and Systematic (1877, 1883). © 2022 WEHD.com
