Pierce Mason Butler (1798–1847) American soldier, born in Edgefield district, SC, on the 11th of April 1798; killed in the battle of Churubusco, Mexico, on the 20th of August 1847. He received a military education, and after four years’ service in the army, he resigned and went to Columbia, SC, where he was president of a bank. In 1836 he went as lieutenant-colonel of a regiment to suppress an outbreak of the Seminole Indians; in 1838 he was elected governor of South Carolina, and at the expiration of his term was appointed Indian agent. In 1846 he resigned this office to enter the Mexican War. He served with great bravery as colonel of the “Palmetto Regiment” and won distinction at Cerro Gordo. In the battle of Churubusco he led his men after being wounded, but was again shot, and this time instantly killed. © 2022 WEHD.com
