17,000 Articles from the Encyclopædia Britannica, 11th & 12th eds. Salomon Munk (1805–1867) French-Jewish historian and orientalist; born in Glogau, Germany, on the 14th of May 1805. Although blind, he attained a high rank among scholars of his time, and was appointed professor of Hebrew in the College of France. He was active in the interests of his race. He was the author of Reflections on the Culture of the Ancient Hebrews (1833); Palestine (1845); a translation of Moses ben Maimon’s Guide of the Perplexed (1866); and other works.
