Walter Raleigh (1861–1922) [Sir].  English man of letters, born on the 6th of September 1861 in London, and educated at University College, London, and King’s College, Cambridge. He was professor of modern literature at University College, Liverpool, and professor of English literature at Glasgow, and in 1904 was appointed professor of English literature at Oxford. He was knighted in 1911 and elected to a fellowship at Merton College in 1914.
