17,000 Articles from the Encyclopædia Britannica, 11th & 12th eds. Wynkin de Worde (d. 1534?) English (or Flemish) printer, born probably at Worth, Belgium, about 1455. He was a pupil of William Caxton, who introduced printing into England. He succeeded to Caxton’s business at Westminster upon the latter’s death in 1491, and later introduced many improvements in the art of printing, especially in type-cutting. It has been claimed that he introduced Roman letters into England, although this is uncertain. Worde printed more than four hundred books, which are famous for their high typographic quality, rather than their literary value or their accuracy. © 2022 WEHD.com
